Humic acids in animal nutrition
Humic acids are healthy not only for humans but also for animals. But what actual effect are they having in our livestock? And what do they contain?
We can explain –
Humic acids are a very valuable resource, which can have a number of positive effects in the organism. We at GITES want to introduce some of the application areas in which they can have a preventive and supportive effect.
What are humic acids?
In the naturally-occurring humic acids in animal nutrition, high molecular, chemical compounds are formed during the degradation process of organic material by “humification”. In other words: everywhere in nature we encounter them as the products of organic substances being broken down. Humic acids are even present in small amounts in products such as peat, bread crusts and coffee.
Why are humic acids valuable?
Humic acids have the ability to tightly bind pollutants in the body of the animal itself. Since they are not absorbed by the body and also cannot get into the bloodstream, the body is able to bind toxins, which are excreted by the gut before a damaging effect may occur.
Because humic acids offer an unusually wide range of applications and are free of side effects, their importance is increasing in livestock nutrition.
How do humic acids “work” in an animal?
Due to the high molecular weight, humic acids will not be metabolized, but remain in the intestinal tract, where they can resolve digestive problems and restore normal gut activity. The positive effect is that humic acids form a thin protective layer on the surface of the intestine, which protects against infection and the effects of pathogens. In the case of injury or inflammation of the intestinal villi they also support rapid regeneration.
But humic acids do have another important characteristic: by using them regularly the organism selectively only excretes the toxins. It does not affect the internal balance of nutrients if used in normal doses.
Improved feed conversion
Humic acids support the formation of healthy villi, which in turn increase the nutrient intake in the intestine, thus they improve feed efficiency.
Reduction in infections and inflammation
Humic acids specifically accumulate at the inflamed areas in the intestine and concentrate there. The risk of infections and harmful processes can be reduced.
We have combined these unique effects of humic acids in the feed supplement WH67® EG02.
